Sharing sounds / Infinite pad...
December 04, 2024, 10:04:14 PM
An infinite pad that's always evolving. :)
By adjusting the volume of Digit 2 in Mix 2, or by setting S&H in LFO 1 while increasing its speed, you get other evolutions. I love this pad, I use it while I'm installing the nuts on each front panel or testing the sequencer encoders.
It may be necessary to touch Master or VCA INIT1 or INIT2 to limit saturation in FX.

Firmwares updates, manuals / Version 1.26
November 28, 2024, 01:06:14 AM
Version 1.26

https://www.baloran.com/ThePool/Updates/ThePool_126.zip

All update instructions are included in the compressed file. After installation and thirty minutes after power-up, perform an autotune.

Changes :

All UNIX system files that are automatically created on the micro SD when using a Mac are ignored. These files previously caused severe malfunctions in The Pool.
#3
A micro SD card in good condition is essential for The Pool to work properly. Simple corruption can cause incomprehensible, ilogical malfunctions. It's a good idea to have a spare micro SD on hand.

On the PC, it's simple.
- Take a new micro SD, 8, 16 or 32 GB if possible.
- If necessary, format it in FAT 32. I say if necessary, because this seems to be the default format for new micro SDs.
- Unzip the file SD LOT2 on the micro SD. This is how the contents of the micro SD should look.

On MAC, I imagine it's the same thing. Also, can any of you confirm this after doing the test?
It's important not to launch the Card Synchro "All Erase and Copy" function until the micro SD has shown that it's working properly (reading and saving sounds).

Discussions / Mapping Velocity
November 18, 2024, 11:26:47 AM
Interesting question from a customer of The Pool

"I am not sure I understand the velocity sensitivity of The Pool. It seems that none of the presets are velocity sensitive. I have an Arturia KeyStep 37 and a NI Komplete Kontrol S61 connected to The Pool - both are velocity sensitive, but the presets of The Pool are always equally loud - regardless of how hard I press the keys. Now, I could - of course - use velocity to modulate the ENV1 and ENV2 of VCA1 and VCA2. Is that the idea... I mean to make The Pool velocity sensitive?
But then, if it works like this, I have the following issue...
First of all, to keep things simple, I MUTE VCA2. Then, I modulate ENV1 of VCA1 by setting  VELOCITY to 100. But as soon as I change VELOCITY from Off to 1 or 2, or 3, or 4 ... to 100, there is no sound anymore. No matter how hard or soft I press the keys, there is no sound. When I set the value for VELOCITY to -100 (so negative)... it works! A soft press give a loud sound, a hard press gives a soft sound.
Is this a bug, or do I simply not understand something?"

My Replys

"There's no default routing for velocity. It's a modulation source like any other, available in the modulation matrix. If I click the button below FREQ (filter frequency) and set a positive value in the VELOCITY modulation (bottom right), then the filter opening depends on velocity, and in the right direction ;)
I thought I saw several presets with Velocity modulation active.   But I can't find them :D :D
For the volume to be effectively velocity-dependent on output, your solution is a good one. You need to set ENV1 to 40, for example, and the VELOCITY modulation to 100. If you set ENV to Zero, the addition of ENV plus VELOCITY will make it difficult to play at very low velocities, which will be inaudible. It's not as simple as classic routing, but so much more powerful. For example, you can morph velocity by putting positive on one side and negative on the other, at both PANs for example, but also at VCO1 VCO2 etc... You can even assign Velocity to the balance of VCF1 - VCF2 etc...."

"Can you make this test ?
(tested on my KEYSTEP 37)
Press INIT
Mute VCA 2
Set ENV1 to 77
Set VELOCITY to 60 in modulation of ENV1.
77 adapt the minimal level and modulation the dynamique of change ;)"

"
I just did a little test.
I set FX LEVEL of the reverb to 50
MOD SRC = The Pool Card 1
NEXT NEXT NEXT
VELOCITY = 100
Velocity adjusts the reverb ;)

Discussions / Scala files
November 18, 2024, 11:21:54 AM
I'm thinking about importing Scala microtonal files into The Pool. Initially via SD, perhaps also via Midi. The SCL file poses no problem, but mapping to "keyboard keys" is more of a pain.
Do you think it would be useful to link a .kbm file (with the same name) to the .scl file, or would a simple automatic mapping algorithm be sufficient? Do you have any ideas on the subject?

Firmwares updates, manuals / Version 1.24
June 09, 2024, 10:59:33 AM
Version 1.24

https://www.baloran.com/ThePool/Updates/ThePool_124.zip

All update instructions are included in the compressed file. After installation and thirty minutes after power-up, perform an autotune.

Changes :

1) Screen saver function added. The time before the screen saver is activated can be set in the system settings.

2) Much better support for Live (and certainly other software). NRPNS are perfectly managed in both directions.

When I make a bitimbral sound, I always start with
  • Mono button
  • Init
  • Mute VCA 2
I work the sound with the upper half of the panel. When all is good
  • De mute VCA 2 and Mute VCA 1
I work the second timbre with the lower half of the panel. When all is good
  • De mute VCA 1
I use the panning of each VCA, possibly with slow modulation, to position each timbre. I use the VCA Init to eventually have a timbre in drone mode....
I may delay a gate with the sound options (OPT button) and or loop a digital envelope,
Then, when all is well, I push POLY 4 to test my sound in 4-voice Bitimbral polyphony. And I smile a lot ;)

Discussions / How to install the legs
May 23, 2024, 11:24:09 AM
How to install the legs ?

- Lay The Pool flat on its table or stand.
- Choose the thread on the casing and the position of the knurls in the foot to get the right inclination and the best support. Imagine where the center of gravity will be for this.
- Fix THE TWO LEGS facing backwards (like a cat lying down...) and tighten a little.
- Lift the back of The Pool and when you have the good inclination, turn the legs so that each one rests on two points.
- Tighten the knobs permanently.
- Release The Pool gently, it should be very stable.

If you try to put one foot and then the other directly into the right position, this is a dangerous operation  :o

I'll try to make a video when I've got a bit more time.

1) Connect your computer to the River on the Panel socket. Stop any sequences, arpeggios, and midi data reception.
2) Launch Library Editor and in MIDI Setup, make sure PANEL@THERIVER is selected. If you need to change this value, it is best to restart the application after making the change.
3) Click the Send button and select the file of your choice, for example :
multi_usine_Lot3 for Multis
factory_Lot3_LvAj_Moog for Singles
Then click the Send button,
Watch the central screen, it will show you the progress of the data reception.
The RIver automatically receives the data, there is no need to go to a particular menu, but once you start the transfer, don't touch your The River until the transfer is finished ;)

Logiciels/MAJ/Softwares/Updates / Last version 2.15
March 28, 2021, 12:23:02 AM
Hi

The EEPROMs to enjoy the Shimmer and Cosmos in the effects of The River are ready. As I announced, it's free for all The River customers of course ;) I'll take care of the postage (simple envelope). If for some destinations this is a problem and that a special and expensive postage is imposed to me, I contact you.

I remind you that you have to open The River to change the EEPROM. It's simple and a PDF document with explanations and pictures will be available soon. In no case will this operation change the conditions of the warranty if you follow the instructions in the document.

The removable IPad / BeatStep support will be available in July in the colour of your The River.  I'm a little annoyed, I couldn't get it at a low price, the paint is expensive ... Its cost will be 70â,¬ plus shipping.

If you plan to buy this shelf, I can put the EEPROMs in the parcel of course.  Leave me a message if you are interested in the EEPROM and/or the support.

PS : The stand with pictures etc... will be available for sale on the Baloran website.

https://www.baloran.com/TheRiver/Manual/The_River_OS_1_91_Beta.pdf

https://www.baloran.com/TheRiver/Template_controler_The_River.zip

https://www.baloran.com/TheRiver/BeatStep_Pro_Noir.jpg
https://www.baloran.com/TheRiver/BeatStep_Noir.jpg
https://www.baloran.com/TheRiver/The_River_Touch_Osc_petit.jpg

https://youtu.be/tMVFALmheLE

-------------

Since version 1.91, The River supports external controllers to increase the ergonomics of The River. The protocol is very simple and many other controllers are eligible to communicate with The River. First of all, you will find all the instructions on the protocol in this document :
https://www.baloran.com/TheRiver/Manual/The_River_OS_1_91_Beta.pdf

I propose three templates for the following equipment:

  • Arturia BeatStep
  • Arturia BeatStep Pro
You can download them here.
https://www.baloran.com/TheRiver/Template_controler_The_River.zip

The "basic" Arturia BeatStep seems to be removed from the Arturia catalogue. If you are interested, I advise you to acquire it quickly. It is still available in black or white
I've designed a support that will be available in a few weeks. It will be painted in the color of your The River and will protect it perfectly. On these pictures it's a wooden proto that carries the equipment:
https://www.baloran.com/TheRiver/BeatStep_Pro_Noir.jpg
https://www.baloran.com/TheRiver/BeatStep_Noir.jpg
https://www.baloran.com/TheRiver/The_River_Touch_Osc_petit.jpg

A short video, in English, shows the Arturia BeatStep Pro remote control in action with The River :
https://youtu.be/tMVFALmheLE

For the connection, it's very simple, midi Out from the controller to midi In from The River. If your controller also drives other instruments, The River's midi Thru will be perfect for that. All information that is not channel 14 will be transmitted to this socket. You can also use the USB Key midi but not the USB Panel midi.

For the Arturia, use the MIDI Control Center software to inject the template into the device.

For touchOSC, I suggest you go to https://hexler.net/products/touchosc to discover this environment. Having an iOS -> Midi interface via an iConnectMIDI+ box, I can connect my iPad Pro to The River for midi. But you can also use Wifi using the TouchOSC Bridge software

Here you are, available in this thread, in french or english, to discuss about it ;)
