Per Laurent's instructions, today I started the River cold and immediately ran a new Learning routine. This time tuning took 80 minutes. The tuning was still bad. The voices themselves were out of tune with each other, and OSC1 and OSC2 were still out of tune with each other to varying degrees on each voice.

The next step tomorrow will be to do a fast tune at startup, then play while the instrument warms up.
If the tuning is still not good, I will then perform a test without Learning and go back to Autotune All.

I will report my results tomorrow.

Première étape : ouvrir The River

https://baloran.com/TheRiver/Open_The_River.pdf

https://baloran.com/TheRiver/Test_Power_Supply_Reduit.pdf

Discussion (English preferably) / Checking and adjusting the pow...

I have noticed that, on some units of The River, the power supply voltages drift slightly over time. Although this drift is small, it can prevent autotune from working properly.

Checking and, if necessary, adjusting these voltages is straightforward. You will need:

  • A good Phillips screwdriver.
  • A small flat-blade screwdriver with a blade width of 1 to 2 mm. A small piece of hard plastic, carefully shaped to fit, is also perfectly suitable for adjusting the trimmers.
  • An accurate multimeter with a display of at least 6,000 counts. Accuracy is essential: the display count alone does not guarantee it, and a basic $10 multimeter will not be suitable.

Step one: opening The River

https://baloran.com/TheRiver/Open_The_River.pdf

Step two: checking and adjusting the voltages

https://baloran.com/TheRiver/Test_Power_Supply_Reduit.pdf

When facing The River, you will find a row of two or three trimmers approximately 1 cm from the heatsink, very close to the rear of the instrument. These are small rectangular blue plastic components with a brass adjustment screw.

The left-hand trimmer adjusts the +15 V supply.

The centre trimmer adjusts the −15 V supply.

On the very earliest units, the right-hand trimmer adjusts the +5 V supply.

Do not touch the trimmer located near the voice board connectors.

Check the +15 V supply voltage at the measurement points shown in the PDF. If necessary, adjust it to a value between +14.900 V and +14.950 V.

Next, check the −15 V supply voltage. If necessary, adjust it to a value between −14.950 V and −14.900 V, matching its absolute value as closely as possible to that of the +15 V supply. For example, if you measure +14.925 V on the +15 V supply, aim for −14.925 V on the −15 V supply.

Finally, check the +5 V supply voltage. On early units fitted with the corresponding trimmer, adjust it if necessary to as close as possible to +5.0 V, without exceeding this value.

Close the lid, but leave the screws out for now.

Firmware earlier than version 2.60
Reset autotune, then run "Autotune All".

Firmware version 2.60 or later
Switch off The River and wait several hours until it has cooled down completely, then carry out the "Learning" procedure.

Thanks for your feedback, Andrewhburton.

It's baffling. On my The River—which is a pretty worn-out model since it's been used as a test bench—this new autotune has worked wonders. But this is actually the only unit I have on hand right now. So I'm counting on all of you for your feedback.

If you have a little time to devote to this issue, The River running version 2.60 can generate a log throughout the entire learning process that will explain what's happening.

I'm also thinking about another issue I've noticed on several "older" The River units. The power supply drifts—just a little, but it's enough to prevent the autotune from working.

I'll write up a guide explaining how to precisely monitor the voltages and how to adjust them ;)

I'm not too worried about it—we'll find a solution.

I installed firmware 2.60 into my River yesterday. The tuning was worse than before. Before I go any further, I need to provide some background:

1. My River had been experiencing tuning issues prior to the update. It seemed to have trouble tuning itself properly after it had been unused for more than a week or two. I previously contacted Laurent who suggested I do a voltage test on the power supply. I had not yet done this when the issue seemed to resolve itself with more frequent usage. The tuning issues were not just between voices; there were issues with OSC1 and OSC2 being out of tune with each other, in degrees which varied from voice to voice, so no amount of fine tuning could get all the OSC1's and OSC2's in tune with each other. Again, this resolved itself somehow, so I never proceeded with any voltage testing.

2. I had been away for several weeks before installing the new firmware, and had neglected to check whether the previous tuning issues had returned during my absence. I had hoped the new firmware would take care of any issues.

So, having installed 2.60 and run the Learning routine, I got a message saying "Learning Success". The process took 82 minutes. Unfortunately the River was completely out of tune - both voice-to-voice and internally between OSC1 and OSC2. I ran a Fast Tune which did not help. I contacted Laurent again, and he gave me a set of instructions to follow to determine whether the problem is in the Learning routine or whether something else is wrong.

I will keep you all posted as I proceed. This process will take several days at least to complete.

Thanks, did you run into any difficulties during the update? With the new software? Are all three firmwares on 2.60 ?
Now, tunning is perfect or no ?

The only difficulty was due to the key card internal usb being disconnected, but once I secured it the update went smoothly.

Tuning/learning took about 1 hour and 45 minutes, and tomorrow I'll have a full day in the studio. Will report back!
